How To Get Dog Poop Stains Out of Your Carpet

Are you a dog lover and happen to have one at home? Chances are that your four-legged, furry friend has left you a “surprise” on the living room carpet at least once or twice. Whether you have a new puppy or a longtime companion, pet owners understand accidents happen. While unpleasant, it’s possible to get rid of poop stains from carpets, rugs, and more. In this article, we’re going to discuss a sure-fire method for getting your carpet looking and smelling good again before the mishap.

You probably already own most of the household items needed to clean up any malodorous (stinky) business your dog has left behind, without making a bigger mess.

DIY Dog Poop Stain Removal Solution

Household Items you will need for your DIY poop stain solution:

  • Protective rubber gloves
  • Dishwashing liquid (non-bleach)
  • White microfiber cloth
  • Baby wipes
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Ammonia
  • Eyedropper

7 Easy and Effective Dog Poop Stain Removal Steps For Carpet

1). Slip on a pair of protective gloves. Avoid any skin-to-poop contact as bacteria can be found in your dog’s stool and Intestinal parasites can be transmitted to people and other pets

2). Remove the dog poop with a baby wipe or a lightly-dampened paper towel. Scrape off any excess with a fresh wipe/paper towel. Pinch the carpet fibers to pick up as much of the poop as possible.

3). Prepare your DIY cleaning solution. Combine in a bowl: ½ tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar into 2 cups of warm water. Always test your cleaning solution on a small, hidden patch of carpet first. Apply the solution and look for colorfastness (fading or running dye) and any other type of fiber damage.

4). Spray or pour a little of the DYI solution onto the poop stain. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then blot, but don’t rub, until the stain is no longer visible. Rubbing can drive the poop particles deeper into the carpet fibers, resulting in a mess that’s much harder to get out. You may have to repeat this step a few times, depending on how big your dog’s business was. Continue applying your solution and blotting until the stain disappears or is no longer absorbed into the cloth.

5). Stubborn stain removal. If the poop stain is still visible, use an eyedropper to apply hydrogen peroxide, then apply a drop or two of ammonia. Let it sit for a few minutes. If you have a wool carpet, skip the ammonia as it can damage the carpet fibers.

6). Rinse and Blot. After the stain is no longer visible, pour some cold water over the area, then place a fresh, dry white towel on the area. Place a heavy object on the towel to soak up the remaining moisture from your carpet and carpet pad. If necessary, repeat the blotting process with a fresh, dry towel.

7). Deodorize the stain area. Get rid of any lingering odor by sprinkling baking soda over the previously stained area. Allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes to several hours to ensure that any lingering odor is completely gone.

8).  Vacuum. Once the area is dry, vacuum the carpet to get up the baking soda and restore the pile.

9). Wash your hands. Always wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning up your dog’s poop.

As hard as you might try to keep pet poop and other nasty stains off your carpets, stuff happens. Never let poop sit longer than it has to because the longer it sits, the harder the stain is to get out.
