Why You Need To Clean Your Mattress and How To Do It

We routinely wash our bedding to make sure it’s nice and fresh, but how often do you think to clean the mattress underneath? Having a fresh bed is essential to your health and well-being. Cleaning your mattress is important for removing dust, dust mites, allergens, odors, stains, and other containments that may be interfering with a good night’s sleep.

According to Dyson’s recent global study into dust, “we spend roughly a third of our lives in bed. And while it may look clean, your mattress may actually be a hotbed of microscopic life, which could be impacting your wellbeing while you sleep.”  The study goes on to say that “dust mites, their feces, bacteria, viruses, pollen, and other allergens make up the complex matrix that is household dust, which also exists in your mattress. There can literally be millions of dust mites in a single mattress.”

The good news is that cleaning your mattress is a lot easier than you might think. Here are 7 simple steps to help you properly clean and maintain your mattress, ensuring many good nights of blissful snoozing:

1). Gather up your mattress cleaning supplies

You’ll need a few cleaning supplies on hand to deep clean your mattress, including:

  • Vacuum with an upholstery attachment
  • Enzyme cleaner or dish soap for removing stains
  • Laundry detergent
  • Baking soda
  • Cleaning cloths

2). Strip down your bed and wash all the bedding

Remove the sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers. Wash all bedding in hot water to help get rid of any dust mites. Depending on the type of pillows you have, you may be able to wash them too. Just make sure to check the manufacturer’s care label.

3). Vacuum your mattress

Cleaning your bed with a vacuum upholstery attachment can be the best thing to clean a mattress. After you have taken off all sheets, mattress covers, and toppers, start vacuuming at the top of the mattress and work your way down in overlapping strokes. Be sure to use the crevice attachment to get any hidden dirt or dust in the seams. Vacuuming can help remove dust and dead skin cells on the surface of your mattress and is also a quick maintenance trick in between deep cleaning.

4). Spot-clean your mattress

Worried about stains on your mattress? Whatever you do, don’t apply harsh chemicals like dry cleaning products or spot removers. They can harm the fabric or underlying materials in your mattress and do more damage than good.  If there is a stain you want to work on, avoid soaking your mattress or foundation with any liquid. The stain remover you choose will depend on the type of stain and the type of mattress you have. Use an enzyme cleaner for biological stains. Spray the cleaner onto a clean white cloth, then blot the stain with the cloth.

Apply cold water to a different clean cloth and continue blotting until the stain is no longer visible. Be sure to use as little product and water as possible. This method is ideal for blood, sweat, vomit, urine, and other related stains. You can also make your own DIY spot cleaning solution by mixing dish soap and water and applying just the foam to the stain, or equal parts cold water and hydrogen peroxide.

5). Sprinkle baking soda on your mattress

Over time, sweat and body oils can leave your mattress smelling less than fresh, especially in a humid environment. You can get your mattress back to its previous glory by sprinkling it with baking soda, a simple and effective cleaning agent, and deodorizer. Start by pouring baking soda into a strainer or sifter and sprinkling the entire surface of your mattress in one even layer.

The baking soda will eliminate odors, drawing out dirt and moisture. Let the baking soda dwell on your mattress for at least one to two hours. Next, use an upholstery attachment or a handheld vacuum to suck up all the baking soda, leaving your mattress clean and fresh smelling.

6). Protect your mattress

Ultimately, the best way to clean a mattress is to protect it from dirt build-up and to keep it clean from day one. But, since it’s inevitable that your mattress will accumulate dust,  allergens, and stains over the course of its lifetime, a mattress protector is an easy and affordable way to extend the lifespan of your mattress, keeping it cleaner and more hygienic.

7). Rotate your mattress

If you’ve had the same mattress for a while and typically sleep on the same side of the bed, it’s possible for your mattress to wear down unevenly. With a one-sided mattress like a pillow-top, it’s a good idea to rotate your mattress 180 degrees so that the top is now at the foot of your bed. This will prevent indentations that cause sagging, which can cause back pain because the mattress can’t support the neutral alignment of your spine.

Different mattress types contain various materials, and some can be rotated more frequently than others. Generally, memory foam and innerspring beds should be rotated once every three months, whereas hybrids should be rotated every three to six months and latex mattresses every six months. If you notice indents on your mattress, you’ll want to rotate it more often

The Takeaway

Proper mattress cleaning and maintenance will help you get more years out of your mattress and also ensure the best sleep. This includes knowing when to rotate or flip (if applicable) your mattress and regular cleaning of dirt, dust, allergens, and other contaminants. Changing the sheets frequently and using a mattress protector will also help keep your sleep surface clean, and undamaged.

According to the Better Sleep Council, you should replace your mattress every 7 years, although it’s not a hard and fast rule. If your mattress is worn out or disrupting your sleep, it’s time to say goodbye to it and get a new one.
