How a Clean House Can Improve Your Mental and Emotional Well-Being

According to several recent studies, keeping your home clean and organized and engaging in the cleaning process is good for you. In fact, research shows that cleaning, or the lack of cleaning, can have a direct impact on your overall sense of wellbeing. This includes the experience of happiness, having good mental health, high life satisfaction, and the ability to manage stress.

If you’re like most people, there is nothing more relaxing and satisfying than entering a clean and well-organized home. Even after dusting, de-cluttering, and organizing a corner, a cabinet, or an overloaded wardrobe, there’s an inherent sense of peace. Ever wondered why we feel so calm in well-put-together spaces?

Research has found that a clean space and the act of cleaning can have a number of positive effects on your emotional and mental health. For instance, it helps you gain a sense of control over your environment and engage your mind in a repetitive activity that can have a calming effect. It has also been proven to reduce anxiety, boost a person’s mood, improve focus and performance, and provide a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

Studies show that cleaning and organizing positively impact emotional and mental health:

A study led by associate professor Nicole R. Keith, Ph.D., a research scientist, and professor at Indiana University, found that people with clean homes are healthier than people with messy houses. Keith and her colleagues tracked the physical health of 998 African Americans between the ages of 49 and 65, a demographic known to be at an increased risk for heart disease. Participants who kept their homes clean were healthier and more active than those who didn’t.

In fact, house cleanliness was even more of a predictor for physical health than neighborhood walkability. In fact, cleanliness was, even more, a predictor of good health than the walkability of a neighborhood. In addition, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America states that the physical activity of cleaning coupled with the end result of a cleaner home helps reduce stress, feelings of anxiety, and depressive symptoms.

In another study published in the scientific journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, linguistic analysis software was used to measure the way 60 individuals discussed their homes. Women who described their living spaces as “cluttered” or full of “unfinished projects” were more likely to be depressed and fatigued than women who described their homes as “restful” and “restorative.” The researchers also found that women with cluttered homes expressed higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Meanwhile, researchers at Princeton University found that clutter can actually make it more difficult to focus on a particular task. Specifically, they found that the visual cortex can be overwhelmed by task-irrelevant objects, making it harder to allocate attention and complete tasks efficiently. When your home is cluttered, messy, or exceptionally dirty, the chaos that the mess creates can impact your ability to focus. The clutter also limits your brain’s ability to process information. In fact, researchers have discovered that people are less irritable, less distracted, more productive, and better able to process information in an uncluttered and organized space.

In a study conducted by Mr. Clean, researchers measured physiological responses like heart rate to cleaning. They concluded that cleaning sparks a level of excitement and enthusiasm, almost like a mini adrenaline rush. All 62 participants in the study agreed that cleaning gave them peace of mind, while 81 percent of participants agreed they felt more accomplished and in control after a deep clean.

In another recent study by Clorox, it was found that just a few extra hours of cleaning per week can increase reported levels of happiness by as much as 53%, The study also revealed that maintaining a clean space is associated with all kinds of benefits like better sleep, increased productivity, and even better focus.

“Cleaning anything, whether it’s wiping smudges off your fridge or removing greasy build-up from your car’s wheels, can boost your mood and give you a sense of pride for a job well done,” said Dr. Jennifer Hartstein, a clinical psychologist. “This positive mental boost can lead to an increased desire to continue cleaning and ultimately results in a truly satisfying experience that leaves the cleaner feeling accomplished.”

The takeaway

In some ways, clutter and mess are linked to negative emotions like confusion, tension, and irritability while a clean and tidy organized home tends to produce more positive emotions like calmness and a sense of well-being. To the brain, clutter represents unfinished business and this lack of completeness can be highly stressful for some people. Clutter and mess can create more stress and anxiety. But by cleaning, organizing, and reducing the clutter, people are able to take control of their environment and create a more relaxing space that even helps them focus better.
